McLaren has in Formula 1 its great priority and in IndyCar a project that is gaining in solidity with Pato O’Ward as spearhead. The manufacturer will even start in 2022 a new adventure with own team in Extreme E. However, the Woking firm is still evaluating new competitive scenarios. In fact, the manufacturer has a priority deal to win one of Formula E’s competitive licenses to compete in the electric series from the 2022-23 season, the first to be played with the new ‘Gen3’.
In addition to Formula E, from McLaren do not lose track of the new era of resistance and the development of an LMDh prototype to compete from 2024 is also on the table. With everything, McLaren does not finish taking the step of committing to either of the two series, perhaps waiting to see the path and evolution that each of them take. Also the expansion of the project in IndyCar and the birth of the new Extreme team with Tanner Foust and Emma Gilmour invites not to rush.
Own Zack Brown has assured in statements to RACER: «I have not committed to the Formula or the WEC. Obviously we have already committed to Extreme E and we have also done it in IndyCar, buying the team. We want to have a third car in IndyCar by 2023. We are going to compete alongside Juan Pablo Montoya and maybe we will have a few more presences towards the end of the year, all depending on what is formed for 2023. Right now we are totally focused on that and getting the necessary resources».
In this line, the person in charge of McLaren has added: “I wanted to make a decision in December for technical reasons. I felt that this step had to be taken, but I think we have had enough work now to delay this decision for another quarter. There are probably three or four months left to have something clear. I like both series and I think we would become competitive in both. We know what we would do in Formula E and in the WEC, but we have to take a little more time.“.
