Its members may be older, but the official debut of marvel avengers as a superhero team it was in the distant 1963, when the comic went on sale The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963)created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Known as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the so-called Avengers were originally Ant-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the Wasp. Each and every one made the leap from the cartoons to the big screen in the Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe (MCU, for its acronym in English).
Almost 60 years after the creation of the superhero group, the oldest mystery about its creation has been revealed by the house of ideas and it has to do with its name.
Could the superhero team have another name?
As a report published on the website of Alpha Beta Playthe # 1 of the Wasp comic seems to answer the question about the name of the Avengers and if they could have another identity.
In this story, the Wasp, in the Janet Van Dyne arc, recalls her early days as a superhero and that her main motivation for becoming an Avenger was to avenge her father after he was taken away by a strange entity from another planet.
His memories are also connected to how the Avengers group was formed and that, curiously, it was the Wasp who proposed the original name.
“It should be something colorful and dramatic, like The Avengers or…”. On that “o”, Ant-Man interrupts the Wasp and replies: “or nothing! That is! The Avengers!”.
With that Ant-Man interruption, the superhero group ended up sticking with the Avengers name, but unfortunately we’ll never know if there might have been an alternative proposed by the Wasp.
