Mark Zuckerberg plans to change the name of his company Facebook, so that his new name reflects the approach he wants to take towards the construction of the metaverse.as reported by The Verge, from a source with direct knowledge of the matter.
The idea is that Zuckerber, CEO of the company, announce the name change during the annual conference “Connect”, to be held on October 28.
But this new nomenclature would not affect Facebook – the social network – as such, since it will surely retain its same name, and the move aims more to be something similar to what Google did in 2015 when creating Alphabet, as the parent company that brings together all those that are part of its conglomerate.
Thus, what Zuckerberg would announce would be the name of the parent company, in which all its services and products would be integrated, such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, etc.
This change seeks to make clear the ambitions of the technology giant to be recognized for something more than social networks and its problems. “We will effectively move from people seeing us primarily as a social media company to being a metaverse company,” Zuckerberg said in an interview a few months ago. “And I think (the metaverse) will also be the next big chapter for our company, that it will really double down in this area,” he commented in another interview.

Facebook already has more than 10,000 employees working on the development of consumer hardware, such as virtual reality and augmented reality glasses, which Zuckerberg believes will become as massive as cell phones.
Secondly, The rebrand would also help the company completely separate futuristic work focused on the metaverse from the wave of criticism that Facebook and Instagram have recently been subjected to., and even WhatsApp, for its controversial privacy policies. Thus, the scandals and problems of its products and social services would not affect –or would affect it to a much lesser extent– the rest of its projects.
