With more than 60 years in the industry, the Barbie doll has become one of the favorite toys among several generations. Therefore, making a movie starring the doll requires an important actress in the main role. And although Margot Robbie is, for many, the perfect interpreter of Barbie, there was someone else who occupied the mind of Robbie (also a producer of the film), and of Greta Gerwig, the director: gal gadot.
In interview for Vogue, Robbie told more than one detail about the highly anticipated film, and one of the topics that came up was the casting process. Although the interpreter of Harley Quinn also serves as a producer of Barbie, at that time she did not see herself as the protagonist. She and Gerwig began looking for actresses who had a combination of beauty and exuberance, what they call “Barbie Energy.” And only one actress combined both elements perfectly.
“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy. I’m saying this because Gal Gadot is impossibly beautiful, but you don’t have to hate her for being that beautiful because she’s genuinely sincere, and she is so enthusiastically kind that she is almost silly. It’s like being right before being dumb.”
Unfortunately for the production team, Gadot was not available to play Barbie. They soon began looking for a new actress to take over the role, and almost as if by magic, they realized that the answer was always in front of them. That was how Margot Robbie became the Barbie that, in a few weeks, could surprise at the box office.
It is worth mentioning that the role of Barbie has been in dispute for some time. Plans to make a live-action movie of the character date back to 2009, when Universal Pictures had the rights. In 2014, Sony acquired them and began writing a script, he painted to be starring Amy Schumer (this girl is a mess). When she left the project due to scheduling problems, conversations turned to Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), but they did not come to fruition either. In 2018, Warner Bros. bought the rights to the tape and began the development of the story that we are just a short time away from seeing.
In addition to seeing Margot Robbie as Barbie, the tape will introduce us to other versions of the doll that have different professions. Issa Re, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Alexandra Shipp, and Kate McKinnon bring these characters to life. Would you have liked to see Gal Gadot as Barbie or do you think Margot Robbie was meant to play her? The long-awaited film will hit theaters in Mexico and Latin America next July 20th.
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
