Women’s Day: why is it on March 8?
On March 8, women are commemorated because on that day, in the year 1857, hundreds of women in the United States took to the streets to protest against the inhumane conditions in which they worked. They received half the salary of men and were forced to work while pregnant. In addition, they served more than 10 hours a day.
They started a march, but the demonstration ended with a tragedy: the police repressed them and caused the death of 120 women, according to the National Institute for Women. Currently, Women’s Day finds its origins in the demonstrations of women who began to raise their voices for a dignified life.
