Hydrogen has become the salvation of the combustion engine, a key chemical element also for fuel cells. The Germans from MAHLE have just presented their novelties related to these two propulsion systems that will reach a new generation of models, including electric ones.
The hydrogen it has become the cornerstone of the future of the automobile industry. If until a few years ago the only possible technological application was fuel cells, today the chemical element is also the true salvation of the traditional thermal combustion engine. Something that manufacturers do not want to give up in any way, and are looking for a way to survive.
Toyota is one of the first brands to embark on hydrogen engines, having shown that the fuel cell is a reality and can be brought to the mass market with FCEV cars. However, manufacturers’ suppliers such as MAHLE are also embarked on these technologies. The Germans have unveiled their novelties for a future generation of new cars with hydrogen as their flag, which they will take to the IAA Transportation fair that will be held in mid-September in Hannover.
MAHLE
The great novelty is, without a doubt, the first hydrogen combustion engine. The firm points out the real key why research has focused on this new alternative to fossil fuels. And it is the one that hydrogen is much more ideal for engines with high load cycles and with sudden changes of the same, being also more efficient in the management of heat, emissions and vibrations.
Although the vast majority of components of the combustion engine remain and the necessary modifications are practically limited to reinforcements in the pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, pins and cylinder liners, a completely new one will be added: a high pressure impactor to wash the crankcase. The key element for which will increase the useful life of hydrogen engines.
The Germans have also unveiled an essential component for the perfect functioning of fuel cells, a humidifier flat membrane. This component is responsible for humidifying the clean air that comes from outside and acts on the cathode as oxidizing to carry out the process of reverse electrolysis. At the same time, the humidifier also protects the cell from desiccationwhich ensures continuous battery voltage throughout all system operating and charging ranges.
