For years, Sony has pursued the mission of building a cinematic universe focused on its Spider-Man licenses. One of his pending tasks in that department was to also configure a Spider-Verse movie starring a female character. Many might have believed this would happen with something related to a more established character like Gwen Stacy, but executives opted for Madame Web. Here’s what you should know about the movie:
Who is Madame Web?
Created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita, Madame Web made her first appearance in the comics in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in November 1980.
Real name Cassandra Webb, she is an elderly woman who suffers from a degenerative genetic condition known as myasthenia fravis. Without going into many details, this disease requires you to be connected to life support whose characteristics and technological frameworks are similar in appearance to a spider web. However, her mental and psychic abilities make her a powerful clairvoyant who usually helps Spider-Man in some of her adventures.
Of course, as happened with the films of Venom, Morbius and soon Kraven the Hunter, this will be an origin story that will offer its own spin on the character and will not involve Peter Parker for now. Although we will see other female characters from the Spider-Verse.
Sony Pictures offers the following official synopsis:
“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a twist on the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures… if they can all survive a deadly present.
