The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Monday that Luisa Maria Mayorcurrent Secretary of Labor of the Government, will be the new Secretary of the Interior, the most important position in the cabinet.
The mayor will replace Adán Augusto López, who resigned last week to seek the presidential candidacy for the 2024 elections for the ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).
“I have made the decision to appoint Luisa María Alcalde as Secretary of the Interior, according to my faculties. She is going to be the Secretary of the Interior to replace Adán Augusto López Hernández, who is in a matter”, announced the president in his daily press conference.
The replacement in the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) caused expectation as it was the most important position in the presidential cabinet, having the obligation to replace the president in case of temporary or absolute absence.
As Secretary of the Interior, the Mayor will be in charge of domestic policy, on migration, human rights, population and religious affairs.
It will also be the president’s interlocutor before political parties, Congress, the Judiciary, state governments, autonomous bodies, and other interest groups, such as civil organizations and business chambers.
Mayor, who has been Secretary of Labor since the beginning of the López Obrador Administration, in December 2018, will be only the second woman to hold the position of Secretary of the Interior, after Olga Sánchez Cordero, former minister of the Supreme Court, who It was from 2018 to 2021.
“She is going to be the Secretary of the Interior, we have already matched up, I think there are already more women than men in the cabinet, but they are women with conviction, with principles, with ideals and that helps a lot,” López Obrador commented.
In addition, Mayor will assume office at 35 years of age.
“He is young, it is very important to think about the generational change, to give young people a chance. In addition, Luisa María is a lawyer, she was already a legislator, a very good job in the Ministry of Labor, they agreed with her to increase wages”, the president explained.
The change in the Secretary of the Interior reflects the political upheaval that has implied the start of the internal contest to define the candidate of Morena for the 2024 presidential elections.
In addition to Adán Augusto López, considered the closest to López Obrador, The now former Head of Government of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum and former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard are seeking the candidacy.
The list is completed by licensed senators Ricardo Monreal, former leader of Morena in the Senate, and Manuel Velasco, from the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, as well as licensed deputy Gerardo Fernández Noroña, from the Labor Party (PT).
The aspirants will begin this Monday political tours of the country to position themselves in the polls that will define the presidential candidate in September.
