Italian inspiration (00:14:16) (Languages: English 2.0 Dolby Digital) (Subtitles: Spanish, Korean, Encoded English for the Deaf):
He was born in Genoa, on the Italian shore, and spent many summers on those coasts, explains director Enrico Casarosa. When he went to the United States to pursue his dream, he realized how much he longed for his land, so he tries to capture it in his work.
In this way, Cinque Terre inspired Luca, being five small towns in northern Italy, explains production designer Daniela Strijleva. Thus, the filmmaker explains that they wanted to capture the sensation of Italian summer, through heat, water and flavors, which are those wonderful details that make up summer in Italy.
For the setting, they traveled along the Italian coast, to soak up the atmosphere, customs and settings, allowing themselves to be inspired by them. Thus, they show us the journey of the artistic team through Italian lands, going to the locations previously selected by the director.
For the film, they wanted to reflect the customs, to capture the idea of a small town with the same people in the same place always. But they also wanted to reflect the sea, its colors and textures as closely as possible, so they needed to bathe in it, feel and smell it, as well as take many photos of the seabed.
Hidden Sea Monster (00:12:23) (Languages: English 2.0 Dolby Digital) (Subtitles: Spanish, Korean, Encoded English for the Deaf):
Part of Luca’s adventure is discovering himself. It is an amazing creature that can be a sea monster or a normal human. But by becoming a human child, his world opens up to new adventures, but also dangers.
In this way, the biggest problem they faced was how to go from scales to human skin. For their monstrous version, they avoided the creepy designs and added lyricism and decorative details.
It was very important to them that the characters appear playful, youthful and expressive. They also confess that the transformation in both directions was the biggest challenge of the project, taking a long time to find a way to make it look natural and beautiful. Thus, when they are in full transformation, they used the technology used in the Coco tape, and in this way they were able to pass a signal through the fingers and make it spread throughout the body in a natural way.
Best friends (00:07:13) (Languages: English 2.0 Dolby Digital) (Subtitles: Spanish, Korean, English coded for the deaf):
For Jacob Tremblay, who voices Luca in the original version, it is a very funny film because it shows us an incredible friendship, and the viewer almost feels that he is part of it when he sees it. For her part, producer Andrea Warren loves how she captures childhood friendship.
While Emma Berman, who lends her voice to Giulia, comments that friendships at those ages are usually very intense, because they still don’t know how to be good friends, and they learn from mistakes. To which, the actor Jack Dylan Glazer, who plays Alberto, thinks that a good friendship has two elements, where Luca represents safety and Alberto represents risk.
Along with this, the artistic and technical team confesses with which of the three protagonists they identify the most, while explaining the way in which they developed the personalities of Giulia, Luca and Alberto. In turn, they comment that the central idea of the film for the director is that you can meet someone with whom you can have a friendship that changes your life and that pushes you to do things that you may not know you wanted to do or did not know. you could do.
