The big day has arrived! After a Friday of free practice with intermittent rain and a Saturday with an atypical classification due to the high number of drivers who had penalties, the decisive day is here. The Spa circuit wears its best clothes for a Belgian GP that starts with the two Spanish drivers as the main protagonists. Carlos Sainz will start on pole and Fernando Alonso will do so in third position.
Penalties for changing elements of the power unit or the gearbox have given rise to an atypical grid in which Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, among others, will start at the back of the pack. Ahead, Sainz has taken first position after ‘inheriting’ pole from Verstappen and will start ahead of Sergio Pérez. For its part, Alonso will start thirdalthough he was sixth if you only look at the clock.
The two-pronged look
The reality of the Belgian GP grid forces have eyes on both the front and back of the grill. In the lead, Carlos Sainz has a huge chance to get his second victory in the World Cup, as long as he manages to keep Sergio Pérez under control. With very little to lose Fernando Alonso will try to fish in a troubled river taking advantage of the absence at the head of the two great roosters of the championship.
Behind, Max Verstappen will start in fourteenth position as the second driver on the grid with a penalty, only behind Valtteri Bottas. the dutch will have just behind Charles Leclerc, so in addition to direct rivals they will be comeback partners. In this aspect, Verstappen has set himself the goal of the podium, although almost everyone thinks that he can even fight for victory. Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris, Guanyu Zhou and Mick Schumacher also carry penalties. Also, Yuki Tsunoda will start from the pitlane.
Don’t miss a detail
The Belgian GP promises great emotions with a Spa-Francorchamps circuit that looks pristine for the occasion. The track has some changes compared to last year, especially in the run-off from turn 1 -now gravel- and in the ‘Eau Rouge’ section and the ‘Raidillon’, where the loophole has also been extended. In addition, the route managers have applied some more changes and have resurfaced several curves.
