Today seemed to be a normal day, until out of nowhere, Disney dropped a trailer for Lightyear, a film that will be released on June 17, 2022. So far there seems to be no complications, until we begin to think carefully. What is it? Lightyear?
Apparently it would be an origin story for a character that would inspire the toy we saw in Toy story, back in 1995. Are you following me? Because this is going to get tricky. The world that presents us Lightyear trailer itβs from a science fiction movie. If it was not for Buzzβs iconic suit, we could mistake the atmosphere for a Star Wars project, even why not? With the Housemarque game: Returnal; where technology is super advanced and interplanetary travel and encounters with aliens are the order of the day.
This image has a lot of similarity to the animated series of Buzz Lightyear: Star Command, which was very popular in 2000. Could it be that these events, together with those in the film, will be canon of Toy story?
And if so, how is it possible that this futuristic story stood up to the creation of a toy in 1995? Are they telling us that there is a multiverse at Disney? What a headache! And we are not the only ones thinking this. Chris frankin, well-known game critic, wrote On twitter:
βIf this is the in-universe astronaut story that led to the popular toy line, presumably this all happened * before * the events of Toy Story 1 in 1995.β
But where would the series of Star Command, as well as the rest of the films of Toy story? Not to mention the rest of the Disney and Pixar movies that they include references to toys that come to life.
Fans all over the world are creating their own theories and timelines:
So the canon Toy Story timeline looks like this:
Lightyear
π
Buzz Lightyear: Star Command
π
Toy story
π
Finding Nemo
π
Toy story 2
π
Kingdom hearts 3
π
toy Story 3
π

Toy story 4

Cars

WALL-E β
So the canon toy story timeline is now:

Finding nemo

The theme took so much force that the movie director, film director Lightyear, Angus McLane, clarified the situation in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. And to the disappointment of many (including me), understand it all it was easier than it seemed:
βThe movie doesnβt end and then you see Andy eating popcorn. This is independent. Itβs the Buzz Lightyear movie. He is that character, but as the Star Guardian, not as the toy. β
In a nutshell, Lightyear is not canon and there is no Toy Story Cinematic Universe. This film is simply about the adventures of a character who could inspire the creation of the toy that appeared in Toy Story.
Editorβs Note: The MCU set a trend that affected the wider community. It seems that there is a need to weave everything together and seek coherence where it does not necessarily have to be. So that? Probably to be recognized as a true fan of something.
