Electronics manufacturer LG has officially announced the Wing, which is the first smartphone in the new Explorer Project. This series is characterized by innovative, bold designs that should provide new features and user opportunities. The LG Wing (LMF100N) is a good example of this, as this is the first swivel smartphone with two screens. Folded you have a regular mobile at your disposal. Users can then tilt the front screen, creating a T-shape and also making the second screen usable.
The smartphone division of LG Electronics has been bad for years. Although the devices often contain new functions, few consumers see sufficient added value in these extras, compared to the price you had to pay for them.
LG takes a different approach with the Explorer Project. We will probably see various display innovations within this new smartphone series in the near future. For example, at the time of the introduction of the LG Wing, a video trailer was shown for a completely different phone model, namely a retractable LG phone. However, it is still unknown when this futuristic smartphone will be introduced. We may have to be patient for this until the beginning of 2021. In the meantime, the Wing will be making its debut.
LG swivel phone with dual display
The Wing is the latest addition to the Korean manufacturer. This extendable dual-screen smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset, which is supported by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space. The memory is also expandable via a microSD memory card.
The primary display has a size of 6.8 inches and a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels. The second display is 3.9-inch and has a resolution of 1240 × 1080 pixels. Using both displays creates new operating options. For example, you can use the top, horizontal display to show movies or games. While using the rear vertical screen to control it. The small display can also show a keyboard, but also opening apps and even editing videos or photos can be done via the small display.
The LG Wing 5G is also equipped with good cameras. A 32-megapixel image sensor has been used for the selfie camera. It is a pop-up camera. On the back is a triple camera built-in with a 64-megapixel main sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera.
The latter is a so-called Gimbal Motion Camera, which provides much-improved video stabilization – somewhat comparable to the recently introduced Vivo X50 Pro. You can also record videos with the Wing Dual Recording, Timelapse Control and Slow Motion. This device is therefore especially designed for creating content.
The dual-screen phone is equipped with a 4,000 mAh battery that can also be charged wirelessly. In addition, Quickcharge 4.0+ is supported, so you can recharge the battery at lightning speed. Furthermore, the LG Wing is equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor, to unlock the smartphone quickly and easily.
Despite all the moving parts, LG has managed to make this device pass the MIL-STD-810G test. In other words, the Wing is shock resistant and resistant to extreme temperatures. In addition, the device is IP57 certified, which means that the phone is also resistant to sweat and dust. At the time of launch, the Wing will run on Android 10.
Buy LG Wing
The LG Wing will be released in two colors: Aurora Gray and Illusion Sky. Initially, this 5G phone will only be sold in countries such as Korea and America. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the smartphone will be sold in some European countries. However, it is still unknown whether it will also be possible to buy the LG Wing in the Netherlands.
LG has not yet released any information about the price. The question, therefore, remains what this unique swivel smartphone will cost. According to rumors, the suggested retail price will be around € 1000. If this turns out to be true, then you pay a considerable amount for the dual-screen technology. Finally, the device is powered by a middle-class processor and also in terms of memory it is rather average than high-end. Expert reviews will have to show whether the double screen actually provides added value in its daily use.
LG retractable and rollable smartphones
Regardless of what you think of this mobile phone, it is commendable that LG dares to opt for a different strategy than the majority. Smartphones have almost all looked the same in recent years. With the advent of flexible displays, the first foldable smartphones are now a fact. Although LG as a display manufacturer undoubtedly has the capabilities to manufacture such a foldable phone, the Korean manufacturer prefers to take a completely different approach.
This was already visible in the last G-series and V-series models. Consider the LG V60 ThinQ launched at the beginning of this year, which is also sold as a Dual Screen phone. However, this smartphone does not actually have two screens, an optional case with an integrated display is available so that users can still enjoy Dual Screen functionality. The Wing is now the first phone from LG to actually have two displays.
From the official video trailer, it was further concluded that another unique and futuristic smartphone is in the pipeline. This time with a retractable screen. The company may also have a rollable LG smartphone in development. Finally, LG Display has been working on roll-up OLED displays in all kinds of sizes for some time now.
