South Korean manufacturer Kia has set in motion all the machinery to carry out an ambitious electrical offensive. More than a year ago the brand established the so-called Plan S. A roadmap whose ultimate goal is to make KIA a global benchmark in terms of sustainable mobility and, more specifically, electrification. Now, new keys to the strategic plan that is underway have been given.
Within the framework of the virtual event organized for investors, the roadmap for 100% electric vehicles for the coming years has been detailed. And important news is coming. Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of KIA Corporation, has been in charge of piloting the event and making these announcements that are so relevant for the immediate future of the company.
KIA’s electric range will be made up of 14 models in 2027
KIA is accelerating its transition process towards fully electric mobility. And for this it is necessary to increase its product offer. That is why one of the short-term objectives includes KIA will have a range of 14 electric models in the year 2027. It’s more, from 2023, the brand will launch at least two electric vehicles per year.
Compared to the previous plan to introduce 11 models by 2026, Kia will add two 100% electric pick-ups as well as a new electric access vehicle. However, before the introduction of an affordable electric model, KIA will focus on expanding its SUV offer with a true flagship. In 2023 the launch of the new KIA EV9 is set.
The new EV9 is a large SUV whose length is around 5 meters and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds and its autonomy reaches approximately 540 kilometers on a single charge. In addition, it will have the ability to obtain the necessary charge to travel 100 km in just 6 minutes. AND for the first time in a KIA brand model, the EV9 will feature OTA and FOD services which will allow customers to selectively purchase software features to unlock certain features. It will also be the brand’s first model to be equipped with AutoMode autonomous driving technology.
KIA will rely on ecological vehicles to improve its sales
The sales goal established for this year 2022 by KIA marks neither more nor less than 3.15 million units. However the goal for 2030 is to reach the mark of 4 million units sold. It is a really ambitious brand and to achieve this, the company will bet on ecological vehicles. They will be one of the central axes for development.
Beyond the marketing of new battery electric vehicles, KIA will also resort to hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. The proportion of ecological cars will go from the expected 17% in 2022 to 52% in 2030. A percentage that is expected to reach 78% in those markets where the electrified vehicle will have a greater weight. North America, Europe, China, and South Korea.
KIA electric car sales in 2030
The launch of new models, such as the EV9, will allow KIA to increase its sales of electric cars. For this year the goal is set at 160,000 units. A figure that will increase to 807,000 units in 2026 to end up reaching 1.2 million electric cars sold in 2030. This represents an increase of 36% compared to the initial objectives announced last year.
The company expects more than 80% of its electric car sales in 2030 will come from South Korea, North America, Europe and China. Local production in these markets will be decisive. In the specific case of Europe, KIA expects to start production of new small and medium-sized electric vehicles from 2025. In the United States, where SUVs and pick-ups are popular, electric versions of these models will be manufactured from 2024. And In the case of China, the brand plans to launch mid-size electric vehicles starting next year. KIA has also noted that in India, from 2025, they will locally produce entry-level and mid-size electric vehicles.
