The video of Andy and Kenshi went viral on social networks this Tuesday, June 20. The images showed the moment when Andy wanted to enter a fast food chain store in Quito with his assistance dog (Kenshi) since he has 100% visual impairment.
“All of us who make KFC Ecuador are deeply sorry for what happened to you Andy, by not having given you the facilities to enter with Kenshi, your assistance mascot”, begins the statement published on their social networks.
KFC stressed that it is an inclusive brand. “Above all things, it seeks that everyone can enjoy a pleasant experience (…) This time we made a mistake that will serve as a lesson.”
The images caused outrage among netizens. In the video you can see how one of the workers did not allow them to enter, even the administrator of the premises in Quito mentioned that “pets are not allowed”, despite explaining on several occasions that it is an assistance dog for one person with disabilities, they even show you their ID.
The National Council for the Equality of Disabilities rejected the act of discrimination and the non-observance of the law. “Our solidarity with Mr. André Díaz in the face of this event.”
He recalled what article 59 of the Disabilities Law says about the assistance of trained animals.
“People with disabilities have the right to be accompanied by animal assistants duly trained and qualified to meet their needs. The permanence and accompaniment may be carried out in spaces and environments that allow access to people. No public or private provision may prevent free movement and the exercise of this right, with the exception of health centers. Trained animals must be duly certified by the competent health authority.
