Kevin Feige affirms that streaming is the future and at Marvel Studios he is ready to take the leap with his Disney + series.
That Marvel Studios is betting on streaming is not a surprise at this point. They announced their first television series with Disney + at Comic-Con San Diego 2019. They expanded the catalog again during Disney Investor Day. Disney wants content for its platform and takes advantage of the fact that Marvel Studios is looking for new methods to tell stories. Kevin Feige is clear that the Marvel series will be great additions to the MCU. Feige believes that streaming is the future and his studio is ready to take the plunge.
The president of Marvel Studios met with the Emmy magazine. During the interview, Kevin Feige talks about the challenges they encountered during the creation of the Scarlet Witch and Vision. Feige is clear that streaming platforms are the future and will help them do things that they could not do in the cinema. Nor does he deny movie theaters and clarifies that each format allows things to be told differently.
“Streaming is 100% the future and the place where users want to see things. And hopefully, they’ll want to see the longest narratives in our series. An experience like Scarlet Witch and Vision is not something you can get in a movie. You make movies for things that you can’t get on streaming. And you go to streaming when there are things you can’t get in a movie theater. And of course, everything that reaches theaters then goes to streaming.”
Kevin Feige wants the audience to be clear that the Disney + series will be as important to the MCU as the movies. So they make sure the marketing team advertises it as such. For Marvel Studios and Disney, it is important that the audience feels the importance of this new type of content that will be exclusive to streaming.
“The marketing team, the people who make our wonderful movies feel like events, are doing the same with our Disney + series. That was something very important to us and to Disney when we decided to enter this new territory. And it helps that each series is unique, interesting and a new point of view”.
Kevin Feige also talks about what it was like to make the move from film to live-action series. Scarlet Witch and Vision is the first series of its kind that the studio premieres on Disney +. The change was difficult to assimilate at first. Especially because of the sitcom tone of the series. But on the creative side, it allowed for much more freedom and possibilities than a movie.
“The series is complicated. Because we are incorporating the MCU rules and narrowing them down in a family sitcom in a suburb. But the episodes do not have similar stress. The funny thing is that it makes the audience wonder when it takes place or if it is an experiment or an alternate reality. The audience wants to reveal the mystery. We are excited that Disney + gives us the creative space to play.”
