Kevin Magnussen is one of the seven drivers confirmed by Peugeot Sport for his program in the queen class of the WEC with his prototype LMH. However, the presence of the Peugeot 9X8 in the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is in doubtsince the French brand prefers not to compete in La Sarthe if that means endangering the correct development of its prototype before a five-year homologation period. A complex situation on which the lion firm will make a decision in the coming days.
In this aspect, If Peugeot decides not to compete in Le Mans, the Dane Kevin Magnussen would have free rein to compete in the queen WEC round with his father Janas they did in 2021. In fact, the plan of the Magnussen family is to shape a project very similar to last season and racing alongside Mark Patterson in the Pro-Am subclass of the LMP2 category in an Oreca 07-Gibson. At the moment there is no more information about it, something normal since there is no firm decision from Peugeot.
“I really hope to return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans again because I have a great love for this race. I would love to compete there again with Kevin, but I have a little mixed feelings.. I would really like to see him there too with the Peugeot fighting for the absolute victory », he assured Jan Magnussen faced with the dilemma of being able to compete alongside Kevin in the High Class Racing team or do it away from his son while Kevin competes in one of the Peugeot 9X8s.
Whatever the resolution, what does seem clear is that High Class Racing has submitted a formal application to have two prototypes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and that he will bet on the presence of the Magnussen family in the second of these cars if Kevin and Jan can join forces. In case of not being possible, the team evaluates other options in a line-up in which Jan Magnussen and Mark Patterson would join a third driver to be determined, in principle also of Danish origin.
The desire of Kevin and Jan Magnussen to compete together if the Peugeot Sport project does not arrive on time stems in part from the bad taste in their mouths left by the 89th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Hampered by various problems, father and son finished bottom of the LMP2 class last year alongside Anders Fjordbach. What’s more, for Jan Magnussen it would be his twenty-third participation in Le Manswhich would place him in eighth place on the list of drivers with the most participations in La Sarthe in all of history.
