Karl Urban, the actor who is responsible for bringing Billy Butcher to life in The Boys, sat down to talk with us about the popular and successful Prime Video series and his character. Find out everything he told us in this note!
We are nothing away from the season finale of TheBoys and the excitement is through the roof. For this reason, we could not think of a better idea than to interview the very billy butcheralso know as Karl Urbanthe New Zealand actor who brings to life the leader of the boys.
As we were saying, we had the opportunity to go to Brazil, particularly São Paulo, to speak with a large part of the cast of the series, not only on the red carpet, but also in a private room of a luxurious hotel. It is this note, we are going to tell you everything interesting that he told us Karl Urban.
Yes ok billy butcher is becoming the most epic role of Urban, the 50-year-old New Zealand actor has a long list of other well-known works. Since Éomer in the trilogy of The Lord of the ringsuntil the Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in Star TrekWilliam Cooper in NET (2010) and Judge Dredd in Dredd (2012). He was also in riddick, Thor: Ragnarök and more.
Before moving on to the interview, let’s remember that the end of the third season of TheBoys arrives on july 8 Prime Video. Thanks to a preview of what is coming in this last chapter, we know that we will see a confrontation between Homelander Y Butcher. This would not be the first, but it seems that it will be one against one (with a Butcher with Compound V in his veins and full of desire to finally defeat his enemy).
Precisely related to this, we spoke with Urban on Butcher and the self-destructive attitude that he is having this season, and we asked him if he thinks that the actions that his character is taking are related to the desire to destroy Homelander Or if it really is like that. The actor replied: “the thing with Butcher is that he is thirsty for revenge. Homelander it is an obsession for him that is consuming him. Is all that Butcher can see, even at the expense of his friends, responsibilities and obligations”.
Also, Urban added: “That’s the wrong way, contrary to Hughie, which was more about seeking justice, which is the most moral and correct path. So in this season Butcher he’s even further down that rabbit hole and all he can see is Homelander. And unfortunately, that comes at a cost.”.
–Do you think Butcher is a bad guy or is he really good on the inside?
Well, I don’t really feel like it’s something I can say. I definitely don’t play the character like he’s a bad guy. I think he, deep down, is a good guy who does bad things. But the good thing about TheBoys is that there is no black and white, the characters are so well written that there are many grays and that dynamic is what makes it interesting. It’s not as simple as that.
-In Culturageek we love this type of series and we know that you were like a demi-god for us (as Homelander) because you were in the MCU and in many other shows. Do you have anything in mind that you would like to play besides Billy Butcher?
I never really knew what I like to do until I have the script on my desk and start reading it and making decisions about how I’m going to play it. If I’m interested in it creatively, that already tells me it might be something I’d like to do, but no. Right now my focus is on TheBoys and I’m excited to record next season.
When talking about the comics, we asked the actor if he had read them and studied some of his character’s characteristics from there or if he just focused all his attention on the script. Urban He clarified that he did not read them all, but yes “those that are related to Butcher and his story”. However, once she saw what the series would adapt, she realized that they would be doing their own story. I read them, but the Butcher from the comics is different. Yes, it was a starting place, but for me the bible is the scripts that they gave us”he added.
–When you read the script do you feel that it is too much or that what they are doing is crazy?
My response when I read the script is: yes, there are shocking moments, but what I consistently find season after season is that the writers are digging deep into the hearts of the characters and their relationships and connections. And to me that’s the glue of the show and if it didn’t have that, it would just be a bunch of random scenes and crazy stuff, and it’s not. I think that’s what the audience responds to and that’s why they keep asking for more.
During the interview, we also spoke with Jack QuaidHughie) Y Eric Kripke (the showrunner from the series) and we asked the three of them what superpower they would choose if they took Compound V (separating from the one their characters have). Quaid He said he would stay with the one he got Hughiealthough he would like to avoid the nudity part, Kripke assured that he is going for the obvious answer and chose to be able to fly and Karl Urban surprised and made everyone laugh. “I think my superpower would be the ability to give someone gastroenteritis.”, he assured and added: “it would be debilitating”.
The third season of TheBoys comes to an end with episode 8 on Friday July 8, but luckily we know that the story will not end there, since Amazon Prime Video confirmed that there will be a fourth season.
