- The trial that ended last week determined that the actress must pay Depp 10 million dollars for defamation.
- Heard’s lawyer said that the actress does not have that money that Justice demands.
- Depp’s lawyers say they may be able to waive the payment if the actress drops the appeal.
Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew, lawyers for Johnny Depp, stated that the actor may decide to waive the compensation imposed by the court if Amber Heard does not appeal the verdict.
The actress must pay him, according to the sentence, 10 million dollars to Depp.
In an interview granted this June 8 on the night of Good Morning America, the lawyers spoke of the possibility that Depp does not demand payment and said that the lawsuit initiated by the actor “was never to obtain money.”
Specifically, Chew told the host of the TV show that Depp always wanted to “rebuild his reputation” and nothing else.
“Deep’s goal was never to impoverish Heard,” Chew said. Given this, the presenter asked: Is there any possibility that Heard renounces to appeal and in return Depp does not seek to receive money for the damages caused?
The lawyers responded: “Obviously we can’t release communications with our client, but as Depp said at trial, and as we have made clear in our pleadings, this was never about money. It was to restore his reputation, and that’s what we’ve done.”
Johnny Depp sued his ex-wife Amber Heard for libel and won.
The statements of Depp’s lawyers came after Heard’s legal representative, Elaine Bredehoft, said in Today that her client was not in a position to pay the 10 million dollars required by the Justice to determine that the actress had defamed Depp.
Bredehoft also said the actress is considering appealing the decision because “He has excellent rationale for doing so.”
Both actors expressed themselves on social networks after the trial ended.
Depp, for example, debuted on the short video platform TikTok with a message criticizing his ex-wife. Heard replied that “women’s rights were violated.”
The video Depp posted on TikTok had over 27 million views.
Among other things, the actor said that “now we are going to be able to move forward, all together, you and me. (…) I have no way of thanking them: love and respect”.
Heard replied: “Just as Depp claims he is moving forward, women’s rights are clearly going backwards.”
