the tech giant Apple seems to be working on developing a “3D mixed reality world” that sounds like a metaversebased on related patent applications and recent job openings.
Since November 1, More than 30 virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR) related jobs have been posted on Apple’s careers page, and the tech giant is looking for a mix of software and hardware engineers to work primarily in its Development Group. Technological (TDG).
The TDG is a secretive team within Apple reportedly dating back to 2017, which is understood to be working on developing AR and VR technology.. Apple has never officially confirmed that such a device was in the works, although it is widely considered an “open secret” within the tech industry.
While Apple is currently hiring for more than 150 positions, according to its careers page, a particular job posting from August makes particular mention of a type of “3D mixed reality world”.
The job ad is for an AR/VR Network Engineer; Part of the description says:
“In this role you will work closely with other developers and build tools and frameworks to enable connected experiences in a 3D mixed reality world.”
A November 9 Digitimes report, citing unnamed sources, claims that Apple’s AR/VR headset will be assembled by Taiwanese electronics company Pegatron – a company Apple currently uses for its iPhone 14 device – with mass production expected in the first quarter of 2023.
A Pegatron spokesperson told Cointelegraph that it “could not comment on information related to a specific customer or product due to confidentiality.”.
Cointelegraph has reached out to Apple for comment on the product, but has not received a response by press time.
Meanwhile, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent files reveal that in August Apple registered the marks Reality One and Reality Pro, both described as “photographic and optical apparatus and instruments” and “virtual and augmented reality headsets, goggles, and glasses.”.
The records were made under a Delaware shell company called Immersive Health Solutions LLCa tactic often used by large companies like Apple in an attempt to keep their future product plans private.
A search of Delaware business entities shows that the company was created on February 11 by The Corporation Trust Company, the world’s largest registered agent services firm used by Apple and other well-known companies like Google, Walmart and Coca-Cola.
the same company was used in a trademark application for a RealityOS in December 2021 in what is believed to be Apple’s operating system that it will use for its next headphones.
Other trademark applications, such as one filed in China under the name Apple Inc, show a haptic VR glove.which tracks the movement of individual fingers, further hinting at the company’s game in a possible metaverse space.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has already expressed his opinion on the metaverse. In a first-quarter 2022 earnings call in January, when asked about the company’s metaverse opportunities, Cook He said: “We see a lot of potential in this space and are investing accordingly”.
Multiple reports surfaced in January 2022 that Apple planned to launch the headset during its June Worldwide Developers Conference, but it didn’t come to fruition. due to a number of development issues.
