James Gunnthe renowned director of films such as the Guardians of the Galaxy saga and the new man in command of the renewed DC Universe, has opened up about the ongoing debate over possible superhero movie fatigue, questioning whether the end of Marvel and DC has come.
As he recalls a report from screen rantGunn has become one of the most powerful people in the superhero bubble by being appointed, along with Peter Safran, as one of the two top executives at DC Studios.
Gunn’s experience at the two biggest superhero movie studios has helped him form an opinion on the debate that movie fatigue is real.
In an interview with rolling stonesGunn was honest about the phenomenon of superhero movie fatigue, saying he thinks it is real. However, the creative was quick to point out that the fatigue was not related to the existence of superhero projects. but with the kind of stories that are being told.
Gunn’s take on superhero fatigue
“I think there is superhero fatigue. I think it has nothing to do with superheroes, but with the type of stories that are told”, assured the filmmaker.
“We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they are these incredible characters that we hold in our hearts. And if it becomes a bunch of nonsense on the screen, it gets really boring.. But I get tired of most show movies, the routine of not having an emotionally grounded story.”.
Gunn concluded: “It has nothing to do with whether they are superhero movies or not. If you don’t have a story at the base, just watch things hit each other, no matter how clever those moments of attack, no matter how clever the designs and visual effects, It just gets exhausting, and I think that’s very, very real.”.
James Gunn’s words speak faithfully of what has been happening lately with both DC and Marvel. The recently concluded Phase 4 of the MCU is easily the most divisive in the history of this Universe and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the lowest-grossing of the Ant-Man franchise, despite all the anticipation leading up to its release.
