The actress of ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Enola Holmes’, Millie Bobby Brownappeared on the “Guilty Feminist” podcast this week and spoke openly about how the press and social media users have sexualized her throughout her career, since she was just 12 years old when she debuted in the famous Netflix series.
The actress turned 18 last February and commented that she has already noticed a difference in how much how now they sexualize her even more in the media.
“Any 18-year-old is dealing with being an adult and having relationships and friendships and being loved and trying to fit in. It’s a lot on top, and you’re trying to find yourself while doing that. The only difference is that I’m obviously doing it in public view, so it can be really overwhelming. She’s definitely been dealing with being sexualized more in the last two weeks after turning 18, seeing a difference between the way people act and the way the press and social media have reacted to my coming of age.”
brown added in the conversation:
“I think age shouldn’t change anything, but it’s gross and it’s real. It is a very good representation of what is happening in the world and how young women are sexualized. I’ve been dealing with it lately, but I’ve also been doing it forever. The media and social media crucified me when I was just 16 years old for wearing a slightly low-cut dress to an awards show. I thought, ‘My God, is this really what we’re talking about? We should be talking about the amazing people who were there at the awards show.’”
Brown is set to reprise her role as Eleven in ‘Stranger Things 4’, the first part of which premieres May 27 on Netflix. The actress is also waiting the sequel to ‘Enola Holmes’ expected to arrive later this year on Netflixwith whom Brown will reunite for the original film ‘Damsel’.
