The latest report from the research and analysis firm Counterpoint Research revealed that almost half of all phones in the world have a MediaTek processor, which confirms the good work of the company during a 2021 that continues to suffer the effects of the pandemic. by COVID-19, which have caused problems in the supply factories.
A few weeks ago we spoke with Alexander Rojas, Corporate Sales Manager for Latin America at MediaTek, who mentioned that part of this success was due to the good strategies that the company followed in the face of the semiconductor crisis. Likewise, part of this success is due to the different solutions and technologies that they have placed in their different chips.
According to IDC figures, MediaTek’s market share during the first quarter of the year in Latin America was 44%, that is, almost half of all phones sold in the region during this period had a Dimensity or Helio processor.
The situation is no different worldwide, since Counterpoint revealed that 43% of all equipment sold in the market have a processor from the Taiwanese manufacturer.
However, what is striking is the brand’s annual growth, since during the same period of 2020 it had only managed to capture 26% of the market, that is, its year-on-year growth was 17%.
Dale Gai, a specialist at Counterpoint Research, revealed that MediaTek managed to increase its dominance in the market thanks to a greater demand for mid-range 4G equipment.
Qualcomm: between lights and shadows
During the second quarter of 2020 Qualcomm remained the market leader with a 28% share, however, for this same period of 2021 the North American firm reduced its share percentage with only 24% of the market.
It is not all bad news. The firm led by Cristiano Amon is a leader in the sale of processors with 5G modem, currently having 55% of the market for phones with this capacity.
In this area, MediaTek occupied the second position with a 30% market share.
“Qualcomm benefited from the very good sales of the Apple chipset in the iPhone 12 with 5G modem from Qualcomm, as well as the demand for its 5G SoCs; from the flagship series (8) to the affordable series 4. However, Qualcomm would have shipped more chipsets had it not been affected by supply-side restrictions and performance issues during the first half of 2021 from foundries like TSMC ”Said Parv Sharma, analyst at Counterpoint Research.
Apple and Samsung in the top 5
Regarding the general market share, Apple remained in the third position with a 14% share, while equipment with processors manufactured by Samsung decreased by 5% between the second quarter of 2020 and the same period of this year, which led the South Korean company to occupy the fifth position on the list.
Of all the manufacturers, Huawei is the one that registered the largest drop in equipment with its processors due to the drop in equipment sales and the restrictions that the US maintains on the Chinese manufacturer, which has made the development of new Kirin chips more difficult.
