Worldwide, Mexico has always been a benchmark in the field of tourism and there are many tourist attractions in the country that are worthy of admiration and are visited by millions of tourists each year. Of course, in recent years, health tourism is achieving a spectacular boom and there are two variants that are more important: wellness tourism and medical tourism.
Medical tourism is fundamentally focused on surgical procedures, drug treatments and outpatient interventions (mainly cosmetic). For its part, wellness tourism refers to activities that are linked to areas of relaxation such as spas, spiritual retreats, as well as assistance to the elderly, among others.
More than 5 thousand 064 million people arrive in Mexico attracted by health tourism
What is clear is that health tourism has shown a growing trend in recent years. Mexico has emerged as the second country with the largest participation in it, ranking only behind Thailand.
For example, in 2015 around 4.7 million patients and companions were received, which left a spill of more than 3 billion dollars, according to data offered by ProMéxico. In 2017, some 5,064 million people entered the country motivated by health tourism, according to data from Euromonitor.
Donald Trump promoted this health tourism in Mexico, when he carried out the gradual repeal of the obama carethe law that provides access to more Americans to the health sector of the neighboring country to the north.
But what is making Mexico a perfect destination for health tourism? Above all, low costs is one of the main reasons. Above all, the main flows of tourists come from Canada and the United States. Compared to these countries, the prices offered by Mexican clusters are lower by up to 89 percent.
62.3% of doctors in Mexico have a specialty
Likewise, another factor that is making Mexico a perfect place is human capital. For example, it is estimated that 62.3% of general practitioners have some specialty, a figure that is higher than the average for OECD nations. Specifically, the specialties that attract the most visitors from abroad are cardiology, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, reproductive health, fertility, orthopedics, oncology, dentistry, orthopedics and care for the elderly.
As for the states with the most significant participation in this sector, the Bajío region stands out, such as Jalisco, Querétaro and Guanajuato, and this is because they bring together hospitals and hotels in the same place. In addition, Aguascalientes is venturing into health tourism, although it is still developing in this area. Currently, this state has a large influx of patients from the surrounding states and the United States.
