- According to the Ministry of Health there is a deficit of 200,000 doctors in Mexico.
- Although Medicine is a career that offers many benefits, it also has several disadvantages such as the duration of the shifts.
- Because of all the demands within the hospital, it is common to develop Burnout Syndrome.
One of the most frequent answers mentioned by medical students who chose this career is that they did it because they want to “want to save lives”. Although this is a valid argument, it is actually quite far from reality. Around this theme, a professional doctor published clear advice to all young people who are just going to choose their profession.
In this case, the Dr Miguel Padilla He has gained recognition on social networks thanks to his constant publications. Sometimes he offers advice about everyday life, but other times he focuses entirely on his career.
Doctors are not like Batman
Of all the platforms in which it has a presence, it has been TikTok in which it has established itself. To date, he has accumulated 7.2 million followers and the number is growing every day. Much of his success lies in the way he communicates. Usually it does so in a colloquial way and with a language that is easy to understand for other users.
With this in mind, in one of his recent videos the doctor offered a simple piece of advice to all young people. “If you want to save lives, don’t study Medicine because you’re not Batman.” His words seem harsh but they are true because he stops romanticizing this profession.
As part of his arguments, he states that it is okay to want to do good in others, although the reality is quite different. One of the objectives of the doctors is to achieve the healing of the patients but even the most qualified can fail. In the end it is about people and not gods.
The negative aspects of studying Medicine
In this regard, one of the hardest experiences in the profession is having to deliver bad news or witness the death of a patient. Absolutely everyone is going to go through a case of this type because these are situations that cannot be avoided.
On the other hand, Dr. Padilla also offered some negative points about Medicine. These are issues that everyone should be aware of because at some point in their career they are going to have to face them.
Within the list he mentions the medical guards. Young people who are undecided about choosing a career rarely talk about this topic. In real life all students must comply with 36-hour days in a row during his internship.
Due to the above, a paradox is generated. In order to care for the health of patients, it is necessary to sacrifice one’s own. Because of the long shifts, there is a high probability of developing the Burnout syndrome.

On the other hand, in addition to the fatigue that is generated after so many hours, it should also be considered that not all patients are friendly. There are always some who have a despotic attitude towards health professionals and with that they make the days even heavier.
In the end, the doctor’s advice is not intended to keep young people away from studying Medicine, but rather to offer a realistic picture of the profession. It is a career that has many positive aspects, but when it is romanticized, a vision far from reality is generated.
