DC Comics contributor Alex Jaffe answers an interesting question: Is Krypto the super pet the last surviving Kryptonian dog?
That was certainly the intention when Krypto was first introduced. In 1955’s Adventure Comics #210, a second rocket landed in Kansas years after Superboy with a dog on board and a log explaining his situation. Just before the destruction of Krypton, the Kryptonian space program had begun experimenting with test rockets loaded with animal passengers.
The first “manned” off-planet flight was that of baby Kal-El himself, and in the moments leading up to the finale, Jor-El only had time to load one of Krypton’s test animals onto another ship, which, of course, , it was Krypto.
Krypto isn’t the only surviving Kryptonian dog.
Years later, we would learn of a second surviving test animal, Beppo the Supermonkey, who had stowed away on baby Kal’s own rocket and slipped away before the Kents could find him. But aside from that, no other animal was known to have survived the destruction of Krypton…
…until the city of Kandor appears. Miniaturized and bottled by Brainiac before the end of Krypton, life went on for the inhabitants of Krypton more or less normally, but in miniature. It stands to reason that just as the Kryptonians continued to live their lives in Kandor, so did their domestic animals.
1963’s Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen’s #69 featured a kennel full of long-snouted, telepathic yellow dogs, each with the power to track whoever needed to be found just by thinking of them. Here we meet Nighthound, the canine companion of Kandor’s debut dynamic duo of Nightwing and Flamebird, who, unknown to the natives of Kandor, were actually nothing less than a miniaturized Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen. Although the dog Nighthound was originally used by his enemies, he recognized the goodness of Jimmy’s heart and accepted him as his new master. Once the evil ones were defeated, Jimmy had always intended to see Nighthound again on his next trip to Kandor, but that never came to pass.
Oh well. I’m sure it’s fine.
