The Steam Deck handheld console is one of the standout devices of the year. It has met the expectations of most users who were looking forward to it. Now, Valve has confirmed that they are not going to sit idly by: the Steam Deck 2 (name unconfirmed) is a reality and promises many changes from its predecessor.
There were hints that Valve was working on the future of the Steam Deck, specifically some revisions to improve what was presented. Greg Coomer, one of the designers of the original console, has given an interview to Famitsu (translated via VGC) in which he talks about the new version.
Coomer notes that “unless there are major changes, there will be a new generation of Steam Deck products in the future“. And they will not be slight changes, because it indicates that “the design, size and shape will change, and it can also become a streaming machine“. This means that its utilities will transcend video games.
“The Steam Deck is another PC in a different form, but Steam has many other uses besides this portable device, such as on the television or on the desktop, and we will continue to work to satisfy our customers as much as possible.”
One of the most outstanding improvements with respect to the original version will be the battery duration from the console. As pointed out by Valve, the autonomy of the console is a “top priority on our list of future improvements“.
Last but not least, another interview on Famitsu revealed that Valve is working on a lot of new games: “I don’t have the exact numbers, but the percentage of employees involved in video game development is high.“.
In summary: Steam Deck 2 promises significant improvements in battery life, a new design and greater versatility when playing content via streaming. The main utility will continue to be playing, but it will no longer be the only one.
