Next Saturday, December 16, the posadas season begins, which concludes with Christmas Eve. As is tradition, the punch, the bonuses and the pilgrims will be present. However, there is one element that is essential for the fun of these parties, it is the piñata. If you want to show off your copy of it, you can attend the International Piñata Fair 2023 and choose the most beautiful one.
This great event will take place in Acolman, State of Mexico, the birthplace of the traditional seven-point piñata. Therefore, like every year since 1985, you will find traditional copies at the best prices.
International Piñata Fair 2023, celebrating the origin of the tradition
It should be noted that the 2023 International Piñata Fair is held in a region where currently about forty artisans are dedicated to the production of piñatas, generating 15 thousand pieces per year.
According to records, the friars of the Augustinian convent of Acolman had the idea in 1586 of producing piñatas to evangelize the indigenous people with the help of some pre-Hispanic traditions. The Christmas season coincided with Panquetzaliztli, a solstice celebration that commemorated Huitzilopochtli’s journey through twenty stations and culminated with the invitation of friends and family to eat amaranth sandwiches. For this reason, the religious related this festival to the pilgrimage of Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem, giving rise to the posadas.

All kinds of pedagogical resources were used for the posadas, including art for pastorelas and carols, and games such as those that gave rise to piñatas. The latter symbolized the fight of the soul against the seven capital sins (hence its seven peaks), giving rise to this beautiful tradition.
The International Piñata Fair will be held from December 14 to 17 in Calzada de los Agustinos, Acolman Centro neighborhood, State of Mexico. Admission is free and, in addition to piñatas, you will also find decorations, delicious typical dishes, mechanical games and a great musical atmosphere.
