After a five-month drop in the global installation of bitcoin (BTC) ATMs, June has been a period of recovery for that sector so far. All this after having grown consistently since 2016.
The worst month for the installation of ATMs was last May, when the number of new installed ATMs fell to 205; while, so far in June, there are already 882 new machines installed, which represents an increase of 330%according to figures of ATM Radar.
In December 2021, the figure reached 1,971 installed bitcoin ATMs, and by January of this year the number began to decrease, reaching 1,690. In February it dropped again to 969, in March it continued to drop to 770, and in April to 679. Then, as already mentioned, May was the month with the fewest ATM installations in so far this year.
In total there are 38,014 bitcoin ATMs installed worldwide. The United States continues to lead with 87% of the devices installed in its territory. While in South America there are only 93 bitcoin ATMs, which represents 0.2%.
As for bitcoin ATM installations by manufacturer, the Genesis Coin company has installed 40%, which represents 15,545 ATMs. It is followed by General Bytes with 21.6%, which is equal to 8,215, and in third place BitAcces 16.1% with 6,128 ATMs.
The fall of bitcoin could influence the drop in the installation of ATMs
One of the factors that could have influenced the fall in the installation of ATMs was the drop in BTC prices. Currently, the price of bitcoin reaches figures not seen since 2020. At the time of this publication, the cryptocurrency is trading at USD 23,700.
On the other hand, the restrictive regulations against this sector could also be a reason why they were affected. In some countries like the United Kingdom, ATMs are illegal, a fact reported by CriptoNoticias.
2021 was the year of the bitcoin ATM
With 2022 marking a setback for bitcoin ATM deployment, it can be considered that 2021 was the year for its biggest positive figures.
The bitcoin ATMs installed in 2021 almost doubled the number of those that existed on January 1, 2020. Between September 2020 and the same month of 2021, the growth of bitcoin ATMs was 183%as reported by CriptoNoticias.
