Instagram unveiled a new tool Tuesday that makes it easier for users to connect to view videos or shared content, as part of an initiative to ease isolation amid the coronavirus crisis.
The Facebook-owned social network also announced new efforts to promote credible content about the pandemic and prevent the circulation of false information.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, told reporters that the new tool allows people to connect to view content online while making video calls .
This has become even more important with so many people around the world distanced from friends and family due to quarantine orders.
“WE CAN HAVE A ROLE IN HELPING TO COMBAT THAT LONELINESS IN SOME WAY,” MOSSERI SAID.
The social network also announced that it will increase its efforts to facilitate access to verified information about the virus, for example by directing its users to WHO and local health ministries publications, according to a blog.
It will also add “stickers” to verified content about the coronavirus and remove other information.
The Instagram initiative follows efforts like this by Facebook, both on that social network and on its Messenger and WhatsApp platforms, as well as those of other network giants such as YouTube and Twitter.
