Activision has officially confirmed the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Y Call of Duty: Warzone 2. Warzone 2 is the follow-up to the successful free-to-play battle royale that launched in 2020. Call of Duty: Warzone was hugely successful thanks to Modern Warfare and being a brand new free-to-play game that arrived during the pandemic. Also, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is another title that has been rumored for quite some time, especially after the huge success of the first game.
Over time, Warzone’s success began to wane as it integrated the battle royale with other titles from Call of Duty. As a result, war zone 2 it has been made from scratch with the intention of building a more sustainable game in the long run. Constant bugs, performance issues, cheating, and the lack of features like a FOV slider on consoles have frustrated the community for years, but it seems that Activision is trying to remedy this situation.
During a recent press event, Infinity Ward studio head Pat Kelly confirmed both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. Both titles will be developed by Infinity Ward and built on a completely new engine. Like the first game, Modern Warfare 2 will also serve as the basis for Warzone’s successor. The publisher plans to bundle Warzone 2 with Modern Warfare 2, but apparently not at launch. The first Warzone was released about five months after Modern Warfare, so a similar staggered release is likely to happen again.
Details were scant, but it was confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will release this fall and that the new Warzone experience will include an ambitious sandbox mode. Kelly also claimed that Warzone 2 will be “revolutionary,” but didn’t elaborate. While none of this is particularly surprising, Activision is starting its marketing cycle for the next installment earlier than usual, possibly indicating the magnitude and expectations of this year’s installment.
Rumors suggest that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could go on sale in October, a month before its usual November release date. With all the leaks going around, Infinity Ward and Activision probably wanted to set the record straight and build hype after the Call of Duty: Vanguard disappointment. Although not confirmed, it is likely that this summer more details and the first gameplay of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be offered, as usual in the franchise. As for Warzone 2, it’s unclear when fans will have more news, but it seems the team is keen to tell more when possible.
