Since the implementation in 2015 of the “Infarction Code Comprehensive Care Protocol” at the Specialty Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), to date the lives of 5,948 patients have been treated and saved throughout the country, with a monthly average of 150 people in that care hospital.
Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in the country
Dr. José Arturo Velázquez García, general director of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) “Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret”, pointed out that with this Protocol Social Security maintains its commitment to provide timely care and quality to the population that requires the service due to an acute myocardial infarction.
He explained that cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in the country and one of the main ones is acute myocardial infarction that is generated by the obstruction of one of the coronary arteries.
The medical specialist added that this condition represents an emergency since there is a direct relationship between the time the artery remains blockeday the mortality it generates, therefore it must be uncovered (reperfused) in the shortest time.
Faced with this problem, the IMSS developed the “Infarction Code Comprehensive Care Protocol” that allows establishing multidisciplinary actions to guarantee the diagnosis and treatment of the patient who demands attention in the emergency service for this disease.
Velázquez García reported that Since 2017, the Specialty Hospital has the “Infarct Code Regulatory Center”” for the coordinated link with 24 Second Level hospitals or Family Medicine Units (FMU) with Continuous Admission that make up a hospital network of the IMSS Representations in North Mexico City, East and Poniente State of Mexico and Hidalgo.
He commented that the reduction in mortality and complications due to this type of heart attack is due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the multidisciplinary team involved, and to the hospital infrastructure that guarantees care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and with Hemodynamics in all shifts.
The director of the UMAE “Dr. Antonio Fraga Mouret” added that the person receives reperfusion treatment with angioplasty to open the blood vessel in the first 90 minutes or fibrinolytic therapy to restore arterial flow and break up the clot in the first 30 minutes after arrival at the hospital.
They receive an average of 15 phone calls a day from the medical units
For her part, Dr. Diana Laura Guerrero Camacho, operations supervisor of the Infarction Code Regulatory Center, indicated that they receive an average of 15 phone calls a day from the medical units they have a patient with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and electrocardiographic evidence.
He added that once the necessary information is collected, a folio number is granted for transfer to CMN La Raza, the Specialty Hospital is notified via chat and telephone so that they receive the patient. “Thanks to this, we speed up the care protocols, we help reduce the time with the data collected and the services.”
For his part, Dr. Andrés García Rincón, head of the UMAE Hemodynamics Service, reported that this area is one of the most important for the intervention of most cardiovascular problemssince it is not only a practice for a diagnosis but also for treatment.
