In second place is Venezuela, where the population pays 7,620 Mexican pesos.
In 2023, Mexicans need to have the amount of one thousand 075.80 pesos to buy the basic basket.
In these first weeks of 2023, the markets have changed, especially the Mexican, which began the year with an increase in the minimum wage, Therefore, the Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) has published the list of the five establishments that have given the Basic Basket at a price higher than 1,039 Mexican pesos, making it the most expensive.
In recent data from Profeco, It was established that Mexicans need to have the amount of one thousand 075.80 Mexican pesos, to acquire the products of the basic basket. After said announcement, at the beginning of January, the organism behaved that the prices of this basic basket continue to maintain a constant downward trend.
Let us remember that to establish the quantity, Profeco analyzes the maximum and minimum prices of 24 essential and highly consumed basic products among Mexicans, using as main reference data of the food basket defined by the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).
In this sense, it is also considered that it is sufficient for a Mexican family of 4 members and that the products provide adequate nutrition.
In global terms, in the region there are countries where the cost of the basic food basket is very high, where currently there are still we are recovering from the contractions of the pandemic and that is aggravated by the sociopolitical situation.
According to Bloomberg data, Guatemala is the country with the most expensive food basket, since it costs about 430 dollars, which is equivalent to 8,600 Mexican pesos, followed by Venezuela, where its citizens pay $381 (7,620 Mexican pesos).

Again, with the objective of protecting the Mexican consumer, Profeco listed the five establishments that have given the Basic Basket at a price higher than 1,039 pesos, highlighting business names such as an HEB store located in Saltillo where products are found for a total of 1,093 pesos; Central de Abasto de Mérida (thousand 071.40 pesos); Calimax in Tijuana (1,047.50 pesos), Soriana Híper in Veracruz (1,039.90 pesos) and Central de Abasto de Durango (1,040 pesos).
According to the weekly report Who’s Who in the Prices of Basic Necessities, the agency pointed out that these businesses “they breach the anti-inflation agreement” established.
Likewise, Profeco establishes which are the establishments with cheap prices, where In the Central region (Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, Querétaro and Tlaxcala) there are very accessible stores.
Among these establishments, the lowest prices are at Bodega Aurrera Chapultepec, Cuernavaca (869.70 Mexican pesos); Los Gómez Subdivision Law, city of León (912.85 pesos); Mega Soriana journalist colony, Coacalco, State of Mexico (915.10 pesos); Soriana Híper San Miguel Chapultepec, Miguel Hidalgo mayor’s office, Mexico City (915.40 pesos); and Central de Abasto de Iztapalapa, Mexico City (918.50 Mexican pesos).
Meanwhile, in the Central-North region of the country, the cheapest costs are in Soriana Híper Francisco Villa, Culiacán (939.90 pesos); Mega Soriana Residencial La Estancia, Zapopan, Jalisco (42.10); Walmart ExHacienda La Huerta, Morelia (950.90 pesos); Soriana Market, SPAUAZ neighborhood, Zacatecas city (954.60 pesos); and Mega Soriana Tangamanga, San Luis Potosí (964.60 pesos).
In the North region the cheapest establishments are Bodega Aurrera Downtown Area, Saltillo (910.30 pesos); Ley colonia Hipódromo, Tijuana (917.50 pesos); Aurrera San Isidro Winery, San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León (925.90 pesos); Bodega Aurrera Infonavit Expansion Airport, Ciudad Juárez (960.30 pesos); and Walmart Framboyanes, Tampico (972 pesos).
And that is how, more and more Profeco remains alert to protect consumers, who are the most affected of some establishments that take advantage of the increases to go up.
