The idea of Apple to digitize the wallet of its users materializes little by little. The new step on this path is the digitization of driver’s licenses and state IDs, functions that will be included in the update of iOS 15, which is expected later this year.
In this way, Apple Wallet users will have the ability to add their driver’s licenses or state IDs to their digital wallets. Initially, these options will be available in the United States, but at the moment not in the whole country, since the support of state governments is required, since it is the states that issue driver’s licenses and other forms of identification.
The first states to have the ability to digitize their driver’s licenses and other IDs through Apple Wallet will be Arizona and Georgia.. Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah are expected to follow, but no date was given for this to occur.
“The addition of driver’s licenses and state IDs to the Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision to replace the physical wallet with a digital one that is secure and easy to use,” said Jennifer Bailey, vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
Apple said in June that it would begin to support licenses and digital IDs, and that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would be the first agency to begin accepting such digitized documents through an iPhone at various airports. . What’s more, Apple says the feature is safe and does not require handing over or unlocking the phone.
The digital license and identification data is stored on the iPhone, but the state authority must verify the driver’s license, both to support drivers and travelers and to prevent false IDs from being presented.
Although this functionality of Apple Wallet seeks to make the procedures and activities that require the presentation of identifications more practical and agile, the measure has not won the trust of privacy experts, who lament Apple’s lack of transparency about how it built this technology and what you finally get from it.
And is that the apple company has not given details on how digital identification technology works, or what data a state government obtains as part of the process to digitize a license or other documents on an iPhone. So there are still privacy issues that Apple will have to address in the future.
