During the Closing Ceremony of the 2022-2023 Academic Cycle and inauguration of the 2023-2024 Academic Cycle, the General Director of Social Security presented the statistics that confirm this increase. First he said that This year 5,600 residents are graduating (2,715 women and 2,885 men).
The IMSS will have more residents than ever
For his part, As of March 1, 2023, there will be 10,599 new residents. This is the largest figure in the history of the IMSS and the objective is to reverse the deficit of specialists in the country.

The owner of the IMSS reported that in 2020 the places for residents were increased from 4,613 to 5,080. By 2021 there were 8,300 and in 2022 more than 10,000 were offered in 70 medical specialties: 24 direct or trunk entry, 45 indirect or branch and a dental specialty.
“Of these more than 10,000 places, 9,040 were offered through the National Medical Residency Examination System and almost double, 95 percent, of what was offered at the beginning of this administration.”
He recalled that efforts were made so that during the COVID-19 pandemic the investment processes in infrastructure and equipment would not stop. Currently there are 396 academic centers at the three levels of care. Almost twice as many as there were in 2019, which were 200.
Better spaces in hospitals for resident training
Zoé Robledo indicated that work will be done in the rest of the hospitals where it is needed and with more courses. To this end, in the 2022-2023 academic cycle, 107 new courses were opened in 60 medical units, in addition to more job opportunities and greater stability.
He announced that the IMSS is one of the main institutions that has raised the need for an increase in the scholarship that includes support for food and lodging. To the 10,599 doctors who enter the IMSS residences, he told them that they arrive at the best specialized school in the country, the “80-year-old IMSS, stronger, safer and much more social.”
For his part, the Secretary General of the National Union of Social Security Workers (SNTSS), Dr. Arturo Olivares Cerda, acknowledged that during the current administration the number of places for residency has increased, the labor conditions of the union have improved and work is being done to reduce the deficit of specialist doctors and consolidate their training.
He told the graduate doctors that they have the challenge of consolidating a modern health system close to the patients and invited them to join the ranks of the IMSS, which is “the best school for medical teaching and research”, which has the support of of the best health union in the country and where they will have personal and professional development.
Meanwhile, the director of Medical Benefits of the IMSS, Dr. Célida Duque Molina, explained that this year the record for discharges at the Institute was broken, 14 percent more than the discharges of 2022, which were 4,930. For the 2022-2023 Academic Cycle, more than 24,000 doctors are in training in 70 different specialties.
The specialties with the most graduates
He highlighted that this year there are 10 specialties where the largest number of trained doctors are concentrated, among them Medical Surgical Emergencies, Anesthesiology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery and Family Medicine. While in total, during the last decade 43 thousand 453 specialists have graduated.
During the ceremony, 10 diplomas were delivered to doctors representing the 5,600 Graduated Resident Physicians, and graduate resident physicians and professors who wrote the best theses in the surgical and medical area were recognized.
