It is not necessary to leave Spain to discover authentic wonders (we have already shown you, for example, locations that transport you to the USA). And the Island of Tambo, located in the middle of the Ría de Pontevedra, in Galicia, is one more example of this.
An uninhabited island that surprisingly appears pixelated in Google satellite images, but that can be visited.
The Irmanda de Illa de Tallo, with the support of the Poio Council, offers guided tours with restrictions. And it is that in this area it was under the military jurisdiction of the Naval School of Marín and although it has been almost demilitarized since 2022, it has closed areas.
Visits are reduced in capacity and dates. They leave the port of A Canteira de Comparro at 10 am and return at 2 pm. In them, You can visit its therapeutic forests, the beaches, the Tenlo lighthouse, the remains of a monastery, a bunker that fell into disuse and even the old barracks.
The island is wild looking, it has almost no buildings, It has two impressive virgin beaches, Area da Illa and A Dreidáand stands out for its leafiness.
Apart from being used as a military base, Tambo Island has hardly had any human footprints. In the Iron Age there was a castro in it and in the 6th century a monastery and a Benedictine monastery. And it was attacked several times by pirates.
The enclave is as unknown as it is spectacular, which is why some people even consider the option that it could form part of the Parque Natural das Illas Atlánticas.
For this summer 2022, you can still reserve August 14 and 27 and September 17 by filling out a form on the website of the Pontevedra Provincial Council.
