Mexico will be positioned in the 29th place worldwide in per capita spending on international tourismaccording to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), celebrated this Monday the Mexican Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco.
According to preliminary data from the UNWTO, cut to last September, Mexico will close 2021 in second place, in international tourist arrivals, only below France; in ninth place in foreign currency acquisition, and now in 29th place in average spending per capita.
The Mexican official pointed out that the increase in average spending confirms the projections of the present Mexican public Administration, which opted to favor the income of foreign currency from international tourism, and increase per capita spending, that the number of tourists.
“Once again, I reiterate that the potential of a nation should not be measured by the number of tourists, but by the foreign currency captured, and whose benefits permeate towards the 235 places with a tourist vocation to make this sector a tool for social reconciliation” , he stressed.
According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, as of September 2022, the average per capita expenditure for international tourism in Mexico would rise to $620.4, up from $452.8 in 2020.
Mexico was ranked 40th in per capita spending in 2018, with an average per capita spending of $545.3 dollars, while in 2019 it climbed to 37th place, with $545.8 dollars.
Meanwhile, for 2020, Mexico only rose one position to 36, with an average per capita expenditure of 452.8 dollars, according to preliminary data from the UNWTO.
Also, Secretary Torruco considered the tourism policy implemented by the Mexican Government of not restricting international flights to Mexico to be correctas well as all the management and care for the covid-19 pandemic, and the support of the private sector in implementing all preventive health measures in advance.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico also assured that the creation of products is an anchor and the development of high-impact events in the different states of the country, contribute to the capture of more foreign currency and the increase in per capita spending, by adapting to the tendencies of a more informed and demanding traveler.
“Everything as a whole, gave an excellent result, to the extent that, at the end of this year, we will exceed the estimates by receiving more than 26,121 million dollars for international tourisma record and historic figure in our country, exceeding by 6.3% what was obtained in 2019, the year prior to the pandemic that disrupted the world economy, and changed the profile of both national and international tourists,” concluded Torruco.
