Organ donation is one of the most important activities that exist because it saves lives. That is why so much emphasis is placed on its promotion so that more people join this noble practice. But although in our country the figures are low, The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) remains a leader in transplants and for this it received recognition.
In this case, the National Transplant Center (CENATRA) awarded the prize for the productivity achieved in 2021 of 1,559 transplants. Also for the outstanding trajectory of its work teams at the national level in matters of Donation and Transplantation of Organs and Tissues.
Participating in this event with the representation of the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo, the director of Medical Benefits, doctor Célida Duque Molina, thanked on behalf of the IMSS and the entire work team. She said that each element is very committed to benefiting Mexicans with the donation of an organ or tissue.
He stressed that the head of Social Security has been a permanent promoter of the culture of transplants. His commitment is to improve the number of them and strengthen this practice at the national level.
Work done during the pandemic
Now, although the recognition for the IMSS was for last year’s transplants, in this 2022 it has continued along the same path. In the current period, 331 kidney, 299 cornea, 117 bone marrow, 19 liver and 10 heart transplants have been performed.
Dr. Célida Duque reported that thanks to the intervention of the Hospital Donation Coordinator, donations have increased by 343 so far this year. The figure is similar to that reached the same week in 2019. In that year, total donations were 1,112, prior to the pandemic.
Said The IMSS has 54 hospital donation coordinators, distributed in 77 hospitals of the institutional network. In addition, they all have specialist doctors with a diploma from CENATRA and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
For his part, Dr. José Salvador Aburto Morales, general director of CENATRA, inaugurated the 57th Edition of the Diploma for the Training of Hospital Coordinators of Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation Purposes, and the Ninth Edition of the Legal and Bioethical Fundamentals Course of the process Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplant Purposes for Health Professionals.
Half of the country’s transplants are performed at the IMSS
He stressed that at the national level, the Institute carried out practically 50 percent of all procedures. This is due to the fact that Social Security has the most successful Donation and Transplantation Program of the institutional coordinations.
According to the 2021 registry, a total of 2,690 donations were made in the country. Of that figure, 1,191 were in the IMSS, which represents 44.6 percent of those achieved at the national level.
Regarding the transplants carried out by the Institute, there were 1,559, which represent 47.1 percent of the total carried out in Mexico. He referred to cadaveric donor heart transplants, 19 out of 26, that is, 63 percent of those done at the Institute.
The owner of CENATRA explained that corneal transplants were 676 out of 1,328, that is, 50.9 percent; There were 39 of 122 cadaveric donor livers, 31.9 percent nationwide, and 99 percent of living donors, most of which are done at the IMSS; cadaveric kidney 261 of 468, with 55.76 percent; living donor 552 of 1,499; that is, 36.8 percent.
