The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) performed its first heart transplant of the year, which will improve the quality of life of a 47-year-old man. He suffered from dilated heart disease, a disease that weakens and thins the heart, which is unable to pump blood efficiently throughout the body.
The surgical intervention was performed by specialists from the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) General Hospital “Dr. Gaudencio González Garza” of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza. And it was possible due to the altruism of the family of a 22-year-old brain-dead man.

The procurement of the heart was carried out at the San Juan del Río General Hospital, in Querétaro, belonging to the State Health Secretariat. Place to which the UMAE organ and tissue procurement team moved for transplant purposes. It was also possible to obtain liver, kidneys, corneas and musculoskeletal tissue.
The first heart to be transplanted at the UMAE General Hospital of the CMN La Raza in 2022, was transferred by helicopter from San Juan del Río to the heliport of the Traumatology Hospital “Dr. Victorio de la Fuente Narváez”, in Magdalena de las Salinas, and later by ambulance to the General Hospital CMN de La Raza.
