The IMSS orphan’s pension refers to a benefit granted by the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS). This pension is designed to provide financial support to the children of an insured worker who has died.
In contrast, this incentive has some limitations to be authorized, such as an age range, among others. We tell you what are the characteristics to request said economic resource from the IMSS.
When an IMSS insured worker dies, their children under 16 years of age (or up to 25 years of age if they are studying) are entitled to receive an orphan’s pension. This consists of a percentage of the base contribution salary of the deceased worker and is granted monthly.

The percentage of said support depends on different factors, such as the number of children left orphaned or if there are other beneficiaries. In this sense, the IMSS assigns a specific percentage for each child and performs the corresponding calculations to determine the total amount of the incentive.
Other cases for which the age range to request said incentive can be extended are:
- If the child of the deceased worker suffers from any physical or mental capacity
- If the child has a chronic illness that prevents him from working or supporting himself
If, on the contrary, the worker’s son does not continue with his academic studies, the orphan’s pension ends at 16 years of age. In the event that he continues studying, this can be extended up to 25 years of age, but his enrollment in a school affiliated with the National Education System must be verified.
In addition to this requirement, the beneficiaries must present the required documentation, such as the death certificate of the insured worker and the documents that prove the relationship of kinship. For more information visit the official page of the IMSS.
