The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) performed 555 transplants in the same period in 2021.
The IMSS has a hospital network made up of 76 Second and Third Level units licensed to procure organs.
Compared to the year 2021, there was an increase of 248% in transplants in the IMSS.
The IMSS has informed that during this semester of the pThis year 2022 there has been an increase of 248% of transplants compared to the same period during the year 2021.
This means that a total of 1,379 transplants have been carried out so far this 2022 while in 2021 only 555 were made.
Of the 1,379 transplants that have been reported, 592 kidney transplants, 544 cornea transplants, 200 bone marrow transplants, 32 liver transplants and 11 heart transplants.
According to Dr. Pedro Paz Solís, Coordinator of Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells, the goal is to reach 2,400 transplants this year.
The IMSS is the only institution that has a hospital donation network, made up of 76 Second and Third Level units licensed to procure organs.
They also have 54 doctors dedicated full time to carry out the entire process and ensure that it is carried out in accordance with the safety standards for the donor, the recipients and the health personnel.
Dr. Paz Solís reported that there are 22,000 people waiting for a transplant on the waiting list of the National Transplant Center (CENATRA). Of which 16,000 are registered with the IMSS and are waiting for a transplant.
He stated that they are working on creating different strategies to meet the demand of all those who need a transplant. The transplants that are in greatest demand are: kidney, liver, cornea and heart.
He also explained that the majority of patients who require a transplant are those who, due to a disease that cannot be resolved with pharmacological treatment or by a device, and had organic kidney, liver, heart or tissue failure such as the cornea.
