Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard highlighted Joe Biden’s immigration policy, after having approved the 24,000 work visas.
In addition, he highlighted that investment in Central American countries would help to provide a better quality of life and control the migratory flow.
The bilateral agreement between Mexico and the United States will be discussed on this topic during the North American Leaders Summit.
Today, prior to the bilateral meeting with Joe Bidenfacing the North American Leaders Summit, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) was questioned about the role that Mexico will play in the immigration policy of USA.
The latter considering that last year there was a record level of arrests of 2.3 million. However, the President pointed out that after the delivery of 24,000 work visas for Central Americans, the number of migrants has been reduced.
“No, there is collaboration and alternative options are being sought. We celebrate that the Government of President Biden has decided to grant temporary permits or visas to Venezuelan brothers and they want to expand this in the case of Nicaragua, Colombia, Haiti, including Cuba. We see that well, because, what does it mean? That there is a conduit, a way for those who want to go live and work in the United States, so there is nothing left to have to cross Mexico with all the risks that it implies. It’s a little light in the tunnel.”
He also highlighted the “exemplary” system that has Canada of work visas, and commented that in the case of the United States there was reluctance, although he highlighted the start of this program.
Immigration policy, priority in the bilateral meeting with Joe Biden
In addition to what the President AMLOForeign Minister Marcelo Ebrard spoke about the immigration policy of President Joe Biden, which completely disagrees with the proposal by the right.
This, according to what the secretary of External relationshipswould be to deport all migrants by any means, whether title 8 or title 42. He clarified that this is part of what is proposed, for example, in the state of Texas and most of the House of Representatives in the United States. Nevertheless; Marcelo Ebrard explained that the passage of the United States is a watershed from the Mexican point of view.
In the same way, he explained that Mexico’s proposal on this issue consists of two substantive elements: investment in the countries of Central America in other countries, to provide better living conditions in those countries; and the second, to generate a regular path where migrants can go to the United States for labor mobility.
“For the first time, the United States has been beginning to speak and establish its official labor mobility documents. That did not exist. Never before. That is very courageous for President Biden and it is a clarification to the Summit of the Americas”.
Finally, the Chancellor clarifies that in this way people from Central and South America are given a way so that they can carry out their paperwork online, from their home. In this way, it is much easier to protect the rights of more than 360 thousand migrantsin order to carry out a documented process and avoid human rights violations.
“We recognize that it is a totally different policy, for obvious reasons, to what the right proposes. We see it with a lot of sympathy,” Ebrard said.
Finally, he stressed that Mexico would seek to take a position of solidarity, noting that it would not seek to deport anyone, but would support all migrants who do not have a criminal record.
