The Federal Institute of Telecommunications in Mexico (IFT) opened an investigation of the application stores in the country due to a complaint about possible monopolistic practices related to its market, which is dominated by Google and Apple.
“The Head of the Investigative Authority of the IFT issued an agreement on September 29, by means of which she initiated an investigation for the probable commission of relative monopolistic practices in the application store market of mobile operating systems and their related markets, to national level,” the Institute said in a statement.
What are monopolistic practices?
According to the agency, they are those known as tied sales, discrimination and increase in rival costs.
Relative monopolistic practices are acts, contracts, agreements, procedures or combinations carried out by one or several economic agents with substantial power and that have, or may have, the purpose or effect of unduly displacing other market participants, substantially impeding their access or establish exclusive advantages in favor of one or several economic agents.
Federal Commission of Economic Competition.
The investigation began from the issuance of the agreement. It will last between 30 and 120 business days, with the possibility of extending this period up to four times, as long as there are duly justified causes.
According to the IFT, the purpose of the investigation will be to investigate the probable commission of relative monopolistic practices and does not prejudge the responsibility of any economic agent.
