The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), said this Monday, April 25, that he was not offended by the statements of the former head of the US executive, Donald Trump.
The controversial tycoon had declared over the weekend that his government had defeated that of Mexico in the negotiations for the T-Mec.
AMLO also said that he has a good relationship with the former president of the United States. “I like President Trump. Although he is a capitalist”.
“He is like that. And you have to see the circumstances [en las que dijo las declaraciones]”, he added at the press conference on Monday.
What Trump said about AMLO and Mexico
At a political rally in Ohio, Trump claimed that threatened AMLO with imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico if the federal government did not deploy the military in the most permeable points of the border and the “Stay in Mexico” program.
“I’ve never seen anyone bend over like that,” Trump added regarding López Obrador’s alleged reaction.
Despite this, AMLO added that he is not interested in “arguing” with Trumpp even though the issue has generated strong criticism.
He even said that the link between Mexico and the United States in the times of Donald Trump was “good for both nations.”
AMLO also said that “they are seeking to put Mexico in their debate topics with migration issues” and that they are trying to “get rid of the racist and discriminatory phobias” that exist in the US and throughout the world.
López Obrador also assured that he will not allow either of the two parties in the United States, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans, nor any of their candidates “to use Mexico as a piñata.”
“They are going to have to treat us respectably, as we do,” he added in his traditional morning.
The political rally that Trump participated in in Ohio was in support of James David Vance, a potential replacement for Senator Rob Portman in the US Congress in this year’s midterm elections.
