When Guillermo del Toro preached throughout the last awards season that “animation is cinema, not a genre”, he always did it with total respect and sincerity for the guild, so much so that his creative future would be there. This was revealed by the director from Guadalajara within the framework of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which takes place from June 11 to 17 in southeastern France.
As part of the activities of the contest, where this year Mexico is the guest of honor country, the winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Film for pinocchio He gave a keynote speech where he talked about how his love for this medium of artistic expression began and his plans for the future as a filmmaker.
Del Toro said he started creating animation when he was eight years old, using his father’s Super 8 camera. Although he always envisioned himself working in that medium, he received opportunities early in his career in live-action projects. after his work the hour marked and his debut Chronos (1992), it would take several years for the Mexican creative to get involved in animated projects again.
“Life had other plans and I didn’t return to animation until I started working with Dreamworks.supervising movies like Puss in Boots and The origin of the guardians”, he recalled (via Deadline).

Among all the animation techniques, it is clear why the Mexican director has a predilection for the stop motion. In his words, the craftsmanship of a project under these conditions makes it easier to capture the imperfect nature of the worlds created and, therefore, reflect our own.
“I hate perfection. I love things that look handmade.. That’s why I put physical sets on them. I try to avoid digital sets and digital effects as much as we can. I love the physical aspect [del stop-motion]”, said the one also responsible for The Pan’s Labyrinth and the shape of water. “stop motion It is handmade, hand-carved cinema. If you need a chair in a movie stop motion, you have to do it. If you need a flower, you have to make it”.
In stop motion It was how he decided to produce his multi-award winning version of pinocchioand this is how an adaptation of the novel will soon be brought to the screen the buried giantby Kazuo Ishiguro. That without forgetting that Del Toro has also insinuated that it is with stop motion as he could finally bring his long-awaited iteration of In the mountains of madness.
It was then that Guillermo del Toro mentioned that, after some additional projects in live action, he plans to dedicate himself fully to animation in the future. These were his words:
“There are a couple of movies live action More than I want to do, but not many. After that I just want to do animation. This is the plan”, Del Toro expressed (via The Hollywood Reporter).
If he sticks to that wish, one of his last live-action projects would be an adaptation of Frankenstein for netflix. You can learn more details by clicking here.
