Hugo Sánchez Márquez was born in Mexico City in 1958 and inherited his passion for soccer from his father, Don Héctor Sánchez, since he played for Asturias and Atlante.
His prolific career began when he joined the UNAM soccer team in 1976 and reaped significant achievements with the Pumas, obtaining in 1977 the Concacaf Confederation of North America, Central America, and Caribbean Soccer tournament.
In addition, the team obtains for the first time in its history the league championship in the 1976-1977 season. After five seasons, in 1981 the striker leaves for Spain, where he will achieve his greatest achievements.
Hugo Sánchez makes history in Spain
With Atlético de Madrid (1981-1985), he triumphed in the 84-85 season, winning the Copa del Rey, the league runner-up and the Pichichi trophy as the tournament’s top scorer. In total with Atlético he played 111 games and scored 54 goals.
Signed by the meringues, Hugo Sánchez begins the best stage of his football career making one of the golden ages of Real Madrid come true (1985-1992) with players like Emilio Butragueño, Jorge Alberto Valdano and Michel.
These are his wins with the club:
- Win the UEFA Champions League Cup in 1986.
- He obtained five consecutive Spanish LaLiga titles, from 1986 to 1990.
- King’s Cup in 1989.
- Two Spanish Super Cups, 1988 and 1990.
- Four new Pichichi Trophies, from 1986 to 1988 and the last one in 1990.
- Golden Boot 1989-1990 as the season’s top scorer.
In 1992 the striker left Real Madrid and until 1997 he played for different teams: Atlante and Atlético de Celaya in Mexico; Rayo Vallecano from Madrid, Austrian Linz and the Dallas Burn abroad.
Officially, in 1997 he concluded his career as a footballer to give way to his work as technical director of teams such as Pumas and León.
He currently works as a sports analyst in different television forums.
Legacy by Hugo Sanchez
- The International Federation of Football History and Statistics, IFFHS for its acronym in English, designated him the Best North American and Central American Soccer Player of the 20th Century in the year 2000.
- In 2004 he was considered one of the best living players in history according to FIFA 100.
Similarly, Hugol, Pentapichichi or The Golden Boy He made history in world soccer for his agility, unchecking and great ability to shoot. He is also remembered for executing the Chileans with great mastery and for the twists he gave when celebrating his goals.
His story is that of a boy who always wanted to be the best soccer player in the world and with perseverance and tenacity he achieved it; breaking barriers and stigmas in his wake; opening the way for other Mexican players to be considered by clubs from other countries.
