We know that in recent weeks, thousands of Internet users have used the Artificial intelligence for purposes related to entertainment. What the characters of an animated series would look like or the illustration of a work of art from a text have been the most common situations that we find on the networks.
However, that does not mean that this is the main purpose of Artificial Intelligence. Scientists in different parts of the world run machine learning systems for the development of the planet.
An initiative that we have come to talk about in this review has Huawei as the protagonist. The famous China-based electronics manufacturer brand runs a program with Artificial Intelligence to improve the preservation of the jaguar in a rural town in Yucatan, Mexico.
The program itself is called Tech4Nature and consists of a whole network of devices installed in a nature reserve that studies the ecosystem of the place, the species that make it up and puts the main focus on the jaguars in the area.
Huawei Artificial Intelligence in Mexico
As noted by colleagues from Millenniumvia Tech4NatureHuawei installed a total of 20 cameras and 60 audio motors in the Dzilam de Bravo reserve, located in Yucatan in southeastern Mexico.
For a long period they have captured images and sounds in an area of about 19 thousand square kilometers (even a radius of approximately 2.5 kilometers).
During the data collection they found that about five jaguars moved in this area: two males, one female and two cubs whose sexes have not yet been defined. The felines moved in four different ecosystems; jungle, savannah, mangroves and petenes.
In addition to the jaguars, they found another 49 species in the area. Artificial Intelligence has the ability to identify each of the jaguars, since each specimen is differentiated by the way in which the spots on its fur are separated.
“They are like your fingerprints,” said Toshio Yokohama. director of Management and Conservation of Natural Resources of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development. “Artificial Intelligence is 90 percent efficient in detecting jaguars”, the experts added..
This mechanism is intended to be implemented in the regions where this animal abounds. The idea is to speed up a project to preserve these nature reserves to promote the reproduction of these animals and move them away from the latent danger of extinction that persecutes them.
