Summer has come in the middle of spring. After a late winter full of rain and cold, including a sandstorm, now there is an extreme rise in temperatures in many parts of the country with values more typical of July than of mid-May.
If you don’t have air conditioning, or if you don’t want to put it on too much due to energy consumption, fans are a fairly effective solution, combined with other tricks that we can all start, such as ventilation first thing in the morning or closing windows and blinds in the central hours of the day.
The door, always open
These small appliances move the air, giving us a certain sensation of freshness. But do you know how to get the most out of it, and where to place it to take advantage of its full potential? First of all, it is important that if you start the fan, the door of the room in which it is working should be open. If you close the door of the room where the fan is, you increase the pressure, and you will not be able to cool that room. Note that negative pressure creates drafts, and closing the door removes that option.
Where to put the fan?
Before answering this question, we must know how these devices work. The air that these appliances move loses heat by convection. Unlike air conditioning, a fan does not draw in “hot” air and blows out cool air. It just moves it. In the case of ceiling fans, hot air tends to rise due to its lower density, pushed by cooler air. And in that movement, a current is generated by convection.
The larger the transfer area of that air, the greater the ability to cool the environment. In this sense, ceiling fans are the most effective because they move the air from the entire room, so their cooling capacity is greater.
When placing a floor or table fan, airflow must be ensured, avoiding placing it in corners, or next to cabinets or sofas. The more diaphanous the environment is, the better.
It is also important be clear about the areas of the room where the sun shines the most. The best thing is that you direct the fan towards those areas, so that the device collects the air in the coolest areas of the room, and expels it towards the hottest area.
In the case of floor or table fans, the most appropriate is place them as close to the ground as possible. Being at that height, it will collect the cooler air, and move it and expel it upwards.
ice, a classic
To get extra freshness, there is a classic trick that can come to you in this first heat wave of the year: place a bowl of ice in front of the fan. The fan will move the cold that emanates from the melting ice, and it will create a quite refreshing sensation.
