Don’t panic, reinstalling the operating system is very easy.
If your Steam Deck isn’t working right or you’ve installed Windows and want to go back to SteamOS, you can always go back to reinstall the steam deck operating system. The process is quite quick and very easy. Besides, does not void device warranty. In fact, an image with the latest SteamOS version is available on the same Steam Deck support page.
SteamOS is based on Arch Linux, but has been completely modified to suit the needs of the Steam Deck. Although when turning on the Valve device the interface looks like a console, it is possible to access the desktop. Simply press the Steam menu button and choose Start / Shutdown and then Switch to Desktop. That said, it’s time to see how to reinstall the operating system.
Downloading SteamOS
Valve has made available to all Steam Deck users a SteamOS recovery image. To download this image you only have access from the browser to the Steam website, check the corresponding box and click on Download SteamOS Deck Image
Once the download is finished you have to copy the recovery image to a USB sticka file with extension img.bz2, using balenaetcher either Rufus. The former is available for Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux. Rufus only has a Windows version.
Reinstalling SteamOS
To reinstall SteamOS you need an adapter to USB type C or HUB to connect a pendrive containing the recovery image.
- Connect an adapter to USB type C to the Steam Deck or a HUB with the pendrive that has the image of the operating system.
- Turn on the Steam Deck by holding down the volume – and power buttons until the BIOS loads. Once in the BIOS you have to go to Boot Manager.
- In the Boot Manager, select the EFI USB Device option and press the A button.
- The screen will turn off and after a few seconds you will see that you can choose between: clear user data, reimage Steam Deck, reinstall SteamOS and terminal with repair tools.
- Select Re-image Steam Deck to reset the device to factory settings. This deletes all user information, installed games, and the operating system you currently have installed.
- From now on you just have to follow the steps that appear on the screen.
The SteamOS reinstall process It doesn’t take long and it’s pretty safe.. In fact, if for whatever reason the installation process fails, your Steam Deck won’t turn into a pretty paperweight. You can always copy the recovery image back to the USB stick and try again. In this sense you can rest easy.
