Reducing the refresh rate on your iPhone can be a trick to save battery life.
The increase in the refresh rate has been absent on Apple devices too much, but better late than never. Since the iPhone 13, the company has matched the technology that Android has been using the longest from its manufacturers. But not all are advantages, since there are reasons to disable 120 Hz refresh rate on your iPhone.
The performance is exceptional and the fluency navigating the system is extreme, but it also has some disadvantages. We explain these inconveniences to you and we explain how to deactivate it to have another refresh rate, as long as it is not a priority for you.
Why you should change this refresh rate on iPhone
Increasing the refresh rate offers you many improvements in screen performance as it defines the how often a screen refreshes the number of images per second. Therefore, the more amount of that rate, the faster the image display will be.
This magnitude is measured in Hertz, whereas most displays have an amount of 60, 90 and 120 Hz. However, there are increasing amounts each time, either on mobile phones or on screen monitors. Having a higher amount gives a better experience, but we have already mentioned that it may have some drawbacks.
Although it is a visual benefit, the main problem is the consumption of resources that it supposes for the device. By having a quantity of 120 Hz, as in this case, consumes more CPU and more GPU (processor and graphics). With these more accelerated components, the cost of battery is going to be higher. In short, this refresh rate is not suitable if the terminal battery is very fair.
The question is, is it worth using? Visually, definitely yes. Both watching videos and playing games is a real treat for the eyes, the experience in every way becomes exponentially better. Nevertheless, not a must-have function in the operation of the mobile.
How to disable the 120 Hz refresh rate
Luckily, iOS has the ability to avoid this problem so that your iPhone’s battery can last longer. The measure it takes is set a limiter so it doesn’t reach that level in the refresh rate. To limit that refresh rate, you just have to follow a series of very simple steps to complete.
Everything resides in the ProMotion function, which is the technology that Apple uses in its terminals so that the screens can reach 120 Hz. Unlike Android, it is the iOS system itself that controls this magnitude, and not the apps as shown. does in Google’s system.
Despite disabling this level of rate, the iPhone still has adaptive refreshment, although below this value. The values between which the limited refresh rate moves are the following:
- 60Hz (16ms)
- 48Hz (20ms)
- 40Hz (25ms)
- 30Hz (33ms)
- 24Hz (41ms)
- 20Hz (50ms)
- 16Hz (62ms)
- 15Hz (66ms)
- 12Hz (83ms)
- 10Hz (100ms)
To disable the 120Hz refresh rate on your iPhone, there are two ways to do it. One is more extreme than the other, but both are very easy to do. We go with the first way:
- Enter the Settings app from your iPhone.
- Look for the section of “Accessibility“, a little further down the menu.
- Within “Accessibility“, go to section”Movements“and access its menu.
- You will see several options on the screen, such as “Reduce movements”, “Automatic effects in messages”, “Preview videos” and “Limit frame rate“. This last option is the one that interests you, whose button you have to activate.
Now, touch the second, which consists of deactivating the 120 Hz through the ‘Battery saving’ mode. This is a temporary measure, but just as effective. This mode deactivates certain functionalities that are not essential to preserve the battery. When you run the ‘Battery saving’ mode, the refresh rate becomes 60 Hz.
