It seems that the weather does not allow us to finish conditioning our outdoor areas to enjoy them. If you are one of those who have already bought a deckchair to enjoy the terrace, but you are delaying the moment of filling the terrace with flowerpots while waiting for the definitive arrival of good weather, this week we have spoken with the floral experts of interflora to give us a few tips to open the terrace to spring and decorate it with plants and flowers to turn your outdoor areas into an urban oasis.
First, study the orientation of the terrace
Not all plants need the same care, or the same amount of water, or sunlight. For this reason, it is important to study the orientation of your terrace to see which plants are the most suitable so that they can shine in all their splendor.
If the terrace faces south or west, it will have a longer exposure to the sun, which is why Interflora recommends that we acquire plants that withstand the heat well and that do not need much water.
On the other hand, if the terrace faces north or east, it is less exposed to sunlight, so there is a wider range of species that we can use to fill the terrace with nature.
Choose the plants well
The great variety of plants and flowers that exist mean that there is no terrace that is the same as another. And as we have already mentioned, depending on the climate and the orientation of the terrace, we can put some plants or others. A wise decision will make our terrace become our own garden.
As for the aromatic plants, such as thyme, lavender or rosemary, are perfect for terraces facing west or south. Another group of plants suitable for this orientation are the Cactuswhich are also suitable for places where it is very hot and also for environments where maintenance is not regular, since they need little water.
On the other hand, if we have a sunny terrace and we want to give it a touch of color, we should opt for the flower plants. Here we find a great variety of geraniums, daisies, gitanilla or the normal geranium,
In the case of terraces less exposed to possible sunstroke, there is a great variety that we can use to decorate the terrace. In addition to those mentioned above, we can opt for plants that like humidity and shade more, such as hydrangeas, azaleas, camellias or gardenias. A good example of this are azaleas, hydrangeas, camellias or gardenias.
Adapt the plants and flowers to the available space
After deciding what species of plants we are going to put on the terrace, it is time to think about its decoration to adapt it to the available space. On smaller terraces, it is important to opt for plants with little development, as well as medium-sized pots and planters. In cases where space is limited, it is important to use the walls to hang pots of all kinds.
We can also use vertical gardens to decorate the walls with different types of plants. These gardens have an automatic irrigation system that provides water to the garden, so maintenance is easier.
In case you have a spacious terrace, you can use larger pots or planters with climbing plants that we can grow on latticework attached to the wall, thus creating a sensation of a vegetal tapestry.
If we have one spacious terrace we will use larger pots and planters, where we will plant larger plants and even trees, here we can also use planters with climbing plants that we can grow on latticework attached to the wall, giving us a sensation of vegetal tapestry.
Water in the right measure
The shower head is an essential accessory for watering, but if you have a busy life and cannot afford to be so vigilant, you can choose to install a programmable drip irrigation system. In case you bet on this system, keep in mind that you will need a tap on the terrace where you can connect the programmer. From there the hoses will come out to connect the drippers that go to each plant.
